959,413. Welders' face shields. H. BURMEISTER. Nov. 15, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960; Dec. 5, 1960; July 12, 1961], No. 40813/61. Heading G2J. A welder's face shield comprises a viewing slit 3 and a filter flap 5 pivotably mounted on the shield so as to be movable into a slit covering position, an electromagnet having a winding and a case 11, the case having an extension 12 which is linked to the flap 5, spring means 15, 19 tending to urge flat 5 into its operative position, circuit means adapted for supplying the electromagnetic winding with a direct current voltage the magnitude of which depends on the welding voltage drop and which is insufficient to energize the electromagnet during welding but which is sufficient to energize it during the idling open circuit position so that it causes the flap to open. A resistance may be arranged in the circuit to adapt it to different open circuit voltages. In the embodiment shown, the weight of the electromagnet 11 assists in keeping the flap in the operative position during welding since it bears on one end of a double cranked rod 7 which links the flaps with extension 12. The slit 3 may be covered with wire mesh or with two pieces of glass one above and the other below the pivot of flap 5. The flap may be pivoted nearer its upper edge than is shown.
