959,302. Filters for liquids. H. MULLER. July 3, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 23967/61. Heading B1D. In a process for filtering off the residual liquid from a disc filter with hollow substantially horizontal filter elements in parallel, pervious only on top, the filter cake on the elements from which the liquid has receded when, e.g., the liquid is at a level 17, is sprinkled by residual liquid, which is pumped from the base of the filter tank 1 by a pump 9 through pipes 8, 10, 12 and brought on to the top filter element through a perforated distributing plate 13. Sheet metal guides 15 are used, or a distribution plate can be fitted under each filter plate, to moisten all unimmersed filter cakes. By simultaneously putting the filter under pressure with compressed air or gas, the last remains of liquid can be filtered off, and pressure will not be lost due to drying and cracking of the cake. A pipe 5 at the base of the tank is used to discharge the residue when the filtering process is over. In a modification, for use when only a small amount of liquid is to be used, e.g. the tank one-third filled, a branch duct 19 is connected between the filtrate outlet pipe 18 and the duct 8 and each has a shut off valve 21, 20, 22 respectively, the valves 20 and 22 being shut and the valve 21 opened in operation.
