Abstract

959,026. Fifth-wheel couplings. CRANE FRUEHAUF TRAILERS Ltd. Sept. 19, 1960 [Oct. 2, 1959; Feb. 22, 1960], Nos. 33571/59 and 6220/60. Heading B7T. A fifth wheel coupling comprises a lower bearer plate 7 mounted on a sub-frame 6 which is pivoted to the tractor chassis by pins 5 in non- metallic bushes, and an air bag 9 which supports the frame 6 at its rear end. The height of the plate 7 is adjusted by a valve 10 operated by linkage 11 from the sub-frame and controlling the transfer of air to the bag from a tank 12 in the chassis and escape of the air from the bellows. A spring-pressed plate 14 and rubber seal 16 controls an exhaust port in the top of the air bag so that when the load on the plate is suddenly removed as during uncoupling the pressure in the bag will raise the plate 14 and the sub-frame and allow air in the bag to escape until the pressure in the bag is reduced to a value at which the springs will close the plate on to the bag preventing further reduction of pressure.
