Abstract

958,508. Ships' derricks. A. E. H. VELLE. Oct. 22, 1960, No. 36313/60. Heading B8B. A derrick 5 is luffed by a winch A which simultaneously winds in or pays out two ropes a, b, and is slewed by a winch B which winds in either rope a or b whilst paying out the other. One end of the rope a is attached to the winch A and passes through a double block 9, a block 10 at the tip of the derrick and back through the double block 9 to the winch B. The rope b passes similarly through a block 11, a block 12 at the tip of the derrick and back through the block 11 to the winch B. So that the derrick may be more readily swung back to its mid position from either side, arms 13 may be pivoted to swing outwardly but not inwardly, from the position shown, in a horizontal plane. Additional sheaves may be provided if heavy loads are to be handled.
