Abstract

956, 472. Photo-electric brightness meters. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 29, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 41001/60. Heading G1A. A brightness meter for determining the degree of illumination of part of a substantially horizontal surface, for example, a road, from a location at a vertical distance from the surface which is small with respect to the horizontal distance from the part of the surface, comprises a first optical system 1, including a lens 2, and a cylindrical reflector 6 for reproducing an image of the part of the surface on the photo-cathode of an electron multiplier connected to an amplifier 5, in association with a diaphragm 10, located at the focal plane of the system with an aperture allowing only the required part of the radiation pattern formed at the focal plane to impinge on the cell, in conjunction with a second optical system 8 having its axis parallel to that of the first system and provided with a lens 9, a screen 11 and a lensed eyepiece 12 to facilitate the alignment of the first optical system in a given direction. The diaphragm 10 and screen 11 form a unitary structure in the form of a slide 14, Fig. 2, with the lower portion having a trapezoidal opening 18 and an upper portion 15 corresponding to the screen 11 having two intersecting lines, the point of intersection coinciding with the apex 19 of the triangular image 17 when the optical system is correctly focused.
