Abstract

Aromatic polyester fibres are dyed or printed by applying an aqueous composition containing a dispersion of a water-insoluble dyestuff, advantageously a thickener and an assistant which is capable of forming with water or with water and an additive, a system consisting of two liquid phases having a miscibility gap, the proportional amounts of water which may contain additives on the one hand and the assistant on the other hand being within the miscibility gap, with the miscibility gap occurring even at a relatively low content of assistant and the phase richer in assistant making up a substantial part within a large range of the miscibility gap, the fibres so treated are then steamed. The fibres may be of polyethylene terephthalate, if desired, blended with other non-nitrogenous fibres such as cotton. Particularly suitable dyes are vattable dyes of the indigo and anthraquinone series. Direct dyes may be included when dyeing polyester/cotton blends. Especially suitable assistants are hydrophilic colloids which are capable of coacervation. The aqueous composition is advantageously in the form of a homogenized two-phase system which may be stabilized with a thickener, preferably sodium alginate. The specified assistants are the reaction products of higher fatty acids with hydroxy-alkalamines and, if desired, ethylene oxide, in the ratio of 1-2 mols amine to 1 mol fatty acid to 1-15 mols ethylene oxide if required, especially from coconut oil fatty acid and tri- or di-ethanolamine or dihydroxyethylethylenediamine, as well as adducts of ethylene oxide or a polyethylene glycol with higher fatty acids, higher aliphatic alcohols, alkylphenols, higher alkylmercaptans and higher aliphatic amines. The formation of a two-phase system may be promoted by the addition of, e.g. acetic acid and/or sodium chloride. The compositions may be applied at temperatures up to 80 DEG C in any known way, especially continuously, e.g. by padding, roller, screen or Vigoreux printing. Fixation is achieved by steaming, preferably at 130-140 DEG C., and may be followed by rinsing in a bath at 70-80 DEG C. containing a detergent and, in the case where a vattable dye is used, sodium hydrosulphite. Examples of the dyeing and printing of polyester fabrics and slubbings are given.
