Abstract

A process for preparing 4-methylmercaptophenol or an alkali metal derivative thereof comprises heating a 4-halo- (e.g. bromo- or chloro-) thioamide with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide in presence of Cu/Cu2O catalyst and, if desired, acidifying the reaction mass and separating the precipitate of 4-methylmercaptophenol from the liquid residue.
