Abstract
A process for the manufacture of esters and polyesters containing at least 50% of ester groups derived from secondary alcoholic hydroxy groups comprises epoxidising olefinically or cycloolefinically unsaturated compounds containing at least 3 carbon atoms with saturated aliphatic monopercarboxylic containing at least 5 and preferably 8-18 carbon atoms, if desired in the presence of accelerators, such as zinc chloride, and preferably with exclusion of water, and converting the resulting mixture consisting of the epoxidised compound and the higher saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms into the ester by heating, if desired, with the addition of further amounts of the higher aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and/or of other mono- or polycarboxylic acids. The preferred per-acids are those obtained by catalytic oxidation of oxo aldehydes; the crude oxidation mixture may be used. Specified unsaturated starting materials include hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, ethers, esters, ketones, acetals, amides, imides and nitriles. Specification 692,417 is referred to.ALSO:A polyvinyl chloride composition comprises glycerol monostearate and an ester mixture obtained by fractional distillation of a product prepared by heating a mixture comprising epoxy-cyclohexane and carboxylic acid, the latter mixture being obtained by reacting cyclohexene in the presence of zinc chloride with a per-acid solution obtained by catalytic oxidation of C10 oxo aldehydes in ethyl acetate. (Example 5).
