Abstract

The invention comprises saturated N-hydroxylactams of the formula: <FORM:0955945/C2/1> wherein Z is a linear aliphatic chain of 4 or 5 carbon atoms which may be substituted by allyl groups. They may be prepared by reacting a cyclic saturated ketone, the ring of which contains 5 or 6 carbon atoms, dissolved in a polar organic solvent, with a hydroxamic acid and an alkali metal hydroxide and acidifying the reaction mixture. Specified hydroxamic acids are nitro-, benzenesulpho- and b -naphthalenesulpho-hydroxamic acids. The N-hydroxylactams may be converted into the corresponding saturated lactams by catalytic hydrogenation in alcoholic solution using, for example, a palladium or charcoal catalyst.
