Abstract
Phosphorus oxychloride is prepared by oxidizing industrial phosphorus trichloride with gaseous oxygen in the presence of an organic peroxide in an amount of from 0.003 to 0.03% by weight of the phosporus trichloride. The catalyst is preferably dibutyl peroxide. The reaction temperature may be between 100 DEG and 200 DEG C. and the oxygen pressure may be between 5 and 20 kg./cm.2. The reaction should be effected rapidly. The use as catalysts of orthophosphorous acid, and orthophosphoric acid is referred to. Specification 727,950 is referred to.
