Abstract

955,164. Rolling. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 16. 1962 [July 27, 1961], No. 27276/61. Heading B3M. A method of rolling sheet or strip material comprises passing the material between two roll assemblies which are prestressed to oppose a force tending to separate the roll assemblies, the prestressing force being automatically controlled such that it is always greater than the separating force by a predetermined value. In operation, screw jacks 28 are operated through gearing by motors 42, which are interconnected by a clutch 48, to adjust the roll pass, hydraulic jacks 74-76 urging work rolls 14 in chocks 15 against back-up rolls 17. Hydraulic fluid is then pumped into cylinders 58 in each roll frame 11 until the jacks are prestressed in compression to the desired degree, loadmeters 53 beneath the jacks measuring the pressure. Any variation measured by the loadmeters during rolling is fed electrically to an hydraulic pump 64 which then corrects the pressure in the cylinders 58 so that the required difference in forces is maintained. Axial movement of the rolls is prevented by plates 22 and 24.
