Balancing recesses in the face of a valve plate engaged by the block of a swash plate pump are supplied with pressure liquid from the high or low pressure ports through restricted passages or under the control of a valve which is spring loaded to its open position and urged to its closed position by the outlet pressure or by the flow of liquid from a priming pump supplying make up liquid in a hydraulic transmission arrangement; the valve may be urged to its open position additionally by the action of centrifugal force on the valve.
