954,347. Laminating. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Dec. 17, 1962, No. 47440/62. Heading B5N. Articles, e.g. disposable food containers, of thermoplastic material are formed by treating the appropriate surfaces of sheets of the thermoplastic material with a corona discharge, bonding said surfaces together by pressure alone, and moulding said article from the laminated sheet thus formed. Thermoplastic materials which may be used include oriented polystyrene, oriented or unoriented polyethylene, rubber hydrochloride, and vinylidene chloride. With reference to Fig. 1, sheets 1, 2, of biaxially oriented polystyrene are withdrawn from rolls 3, 4 and subjected, on their appropriate surfaces, to a high voltage, high frequency, corona discharge from electrodes 8 and 9 in chamber 5. The sheets are bonded, at ambient temperature, by rolls 10, one of which is preferably of an elastomeric substance. The articles are then formed and separated from the sheet by press 11, the two component sheets being reclaimed by bending the scrap sheet sharply round rolls 12 and 13. The article thus formed may contain inserts for decoration or strengthening purposes which have been treated by a corona discharge, and which are bonded between the two surface sheets during the above laminating process. More than two sheets may be bonded together as in Fig. 3, not shown.
