Abstract
954,342. Ventilating aircraft; heating aircraft. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1962, No. 41515/62. Headings F4U and F4V. A warm air heating system for an aircraft compartment heats both the interior and the floor of the compartment. As shown, hot compressed air bled from the engine compressors passes through a gallery line 3 to a valve 5, which maintains a substantially constant mass flow into the heating system, and then into branch ducts 6 and 7. Branch 6 is controlled by an " on-off " valve 8 and leads to further branches 10 and 11 located in a chamber 13 beneath the floor 14 of the compartment being heated. Branches 10 and 11 each have a jet pump 12 drawing in a secondary air flow from the chamber 13, the mixed air passing into manifolds 15 for discharge through nozzles 18 into a shallow space 16 formed between the compartment floor 14 and a panel 17 constituting the top of the chamber 13. Some of the air then passes back to the chamber 13 through holes in the panel 17, while the rest passes into the main compartment through side vents. The branch 7 has a throttle valve 9 and leads to a cooling unit 22 having a by-pass line 23 controlled by a valve 24 which operates in response to signals from a thermostat 28 to maintain the compartment temperature substantially constant. Air from the cooler 22 and by-pass line 23 passes to an overhead manifold 26 in the compartment, and through nozzles 27 into the compartment. A thermostat 30 in the chamber 13 controls the valve 9 so that if more hot air is required for floor heating, the valve 9 will move in a closing direction, and vice versa, thus avoiding throttling the air supply to the jet pumps 12, which need the maximum supply pressure for efficient operation. An orifice in the throttle valve 9 ensures a minimum air flow in the branch 7 at all times. The valve 8 is controlled by an " on-off " switch, so that if the floor is not to be heated, all the air passes to the branch 7 for compartment heating. Air from the compartment is exhausted to ambient through a relief valve 31.
