Abstract

952,795. Motor vehicle axles. LANCIA & C. FABBRICA AUTOMOBILI TORINO S.p.A. Aug. 3, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961], No. 29998/62. Heading B7D. A vehicle rear axle comprises a frame 1 composed of three parallel tubes 2 bolted to axle housings 7 by means of screws 5 welded to the ends of the tubes. The housings 7 are S-shaped and may extend upwardly, Fig. 2, for a low slung frame or may be turned through 180 degrees for a high slung frame. A differential gear casing 4 is bolted within the tubes and has output shafts parallel to the tubes and connected by universal joints 12 to drive-shafts 13. Stub axles 9 are bolted to the housings and support the wheels upon bearings 21. The drive-shafts 13 are connected by universal joints 15 to shafts 14 supported by bearings within the stub axles 9 and connected to the wheels through epicyclic gears 17. Brake discs 20 are connected to the output shafts of the differential gear between the housing 4 and the universal joints 12 and are acted upon by a caliper brake mechanism comprising pneumatic power units 24 and actuating mechanism 25. Flat surfaces 26 are formed upon the axle housings 7 for connection to the springs in the upper and lower positions. The axes of the wheel spindles are co-linear and lie in a vertical plane with the axes of the differential gear output shafts.
