A bobbin-winding machine comprises, at each station or group of (2-5) adjacent stations, a duct extending therethrough from the front i.e. operator's side, to the rear with its central axis in a vertical plane which is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the machine. Air is drawn into the duct past the yarn and yarn-engaging parts of the station &c.,thereby to entrain air-borne fluff and dust in the vicinity thereof, and through a filter in the duct. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, a current of air is drawn by a variable-speed fan 24 past a supply spool 10, through a slowly rotating filter drum 12 and into a duct 23 formed by frame parts 1 and 1a, thence through adjustable flaps 25. A removable tray 15 and receptacle 18 receive heavy bodies such as slubs, drawn from a cleaner 7, and a mat 22 of fluff and dust which has been liberated from the running yarn F or tensioner 6, accumulated on the lower part of drum 12, lightly compressed by guide plate 19 and finally removedby a stripper plate 16. In a modification, Fig. 2, the fan 24 coacts with a stationary plane filter grid 26 and a protective plate 9 is rockable into position 9<SP>1</SP> to allow the grid to be cleaned by a suction nozzle 27. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 comprises an endless moving filter grid 28 from which a mat 22 of fluff &c. is progressively removed by stripper plate 16 and transferred to receptacle 18 by an endless conveyer belt 31. A separate or a single air duct and associated fan 24 may serve each station or group: two or more fans may be driven from a single belt, Fig.4 (not shown).
