Abstract

The invention comprises substituted orthanilamides of the formula: <FORM:0952343/C2/1> (wherein A is hydrogen, when one or two of B, X and Y are chlorine or fluorine and the remainder are hydrogen, or B is iodine and X and Y are hydrogen; or wherein A is chlorine, when B, X and Y are all hydrogen or one of them is chlorine or fluorine and the other two hydrogen) and acid-addition salts thereof; the preparation of the compounds of the formula: <FORM:0952343/C2/2> (wherein B is chlorine or fluorine and X is hydrogen, chlorine or fluorine) by sulphonation or chlorosulphonation of the corresponding 2-unsubstituted-halo-anilines and their amidification of the resulting sulphonate or chlorosulphonate; the preparation of 5-iodo-orthanilamide by iodination of orthanilamide with iodine or an iodinating agent; and the preparation of all the compounds of the first general formula above except the 5-iodo compound, wherein a nitrobenzene of the formula: <FORM:0952343/C2/3> (wherein A, B and X have the above-defined values except that B is not iodine) is, when D is NH2, diazotized, the diazo compound reacted with SO2 and the resulting sulphochlorides amidized; or is, when D is a disulphide group of the formula <FORM:0952343/C2/4> chlorinated and the resulting sulphochloride amidized; or is, when D is -SO3H or -SO2 Cl, amidized, or is, when D is halogen, reacted with a disulphide to produce a disulphide compound as indicated above which is then treated with chlorine and amidized; to produce a nitrosulphonamide of the formula: <FORM:0952343/C2/5> and this is reduced. Examples are given. The compounds of the invention, which are stated to be anticonvulsives, sedatives and hypnoteis, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
