952,011. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 9633/62. Heading G6C. In the core 1 of a gas-cooled, graphite-moderated nuclear reactor, fuel elements 3 are located in passages 2 through which the cooling gas flows upwards and neutron absorbing rods 5, e.g. of iron, are positioned within passages 4 for controlling the neutron flux within the core so as to maintain a power rating distribution which is assymetrical in the direction of coolant flow and generally decreasing in this direction. The rods 5 are suspended by wires 6 from hoists 7 whereby their axial position can be adjusted. Without the rods 5 the neutron flux, and hence the power rating, would tend to be symmetrical in the axial direction following a cosine distribution. If the rods 5 are 0. 65L in length (L = length of the passages 4) and are positioned so that their centres are at a distance of 0. 6L from the lower face of the core, then the power rating is suitably assymetrically distributed. In this way the total power output can be increased by about 7% for a constant coolant mass flow. In an alternative arrangement the rods 5 have non-uniform neutron absorbing properties along their length, either being of varying crosssection or composed of sections of different materials, it not being necessary in this case for the rods 5 to be shorter than the channels 4.
