Abstract

951,538. Spray producers. CHIPMAN CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. March 26, 1962 [March 27, 1961; May 26, 1961], Nos. 11200/61 and 19128/61. Heading B2F. A railway train adapted for spraying weedkiller on railway tracks comprises a vehicle 1, Fig. 1, carrying at least one spray boom member having a plurality of outlet elements 2 arranged in groups each adapted to spray weedkiller over respective portions of the track, each group being connected through a regulatable pump unit 5 to a tank 6 containing weedkiller, there being a separate pumping unit 5 and tank 6 for each group, and regulatable pumping means 10 for supplying water carried by the train to each outlet group 2, the arrangement being such that chemical weedkiller drawn from each tank 6 by each pump 5 is fed respectively into the stream of water to each outlet group 2 (at mixer 3) on the pressure side of the pump, whereby the quantity or kind of weedkiller sprayed from each outlet group can be varied. Each pump 6 may be driven from the axle of the carrying vehicle. The pump 10 may be engine driven. The tanks 6 may each contain a different weedkiller and each pump 5 may draw from any or all of the tanks 6. When a slurry of weedkiller is to be sprayed water or liquid, depending on whether the slurry is to contain one or a mixture of weedkillers, may be drawn from tanks (not shown) by the pump 7 into a mixing tank 8, where powdered weedkiller can be added as required, and the resultant slurry fed to the tanks 6. The tanks 6 and mixing tank 8 may be mechanically agitated. By regulation of pump 10 the proportion of water to weedkiller in the solution fed to the outlets can be varied. The pump 10 may have a pressure relief valve 11 to maintain constant water pressure by releasing excess water displaced by the weedkiller as the amount of weedkiller fed by pumps 5 is increased when the train speed increases. The water fed by pump 10 is mixed with weedkiller in the mixing vessel 3, Fig. 1, detailed in Fig. 3 (not shown).
