Abstract
Butyl esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting a butene with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of perchloric acid as a catalyst, at least 1 mol of the aliphatic acid being used initially per mol of butene. An excess of aliphatic acid may be used as solvent as may be other solvents, such as aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, which are inert to perchloric acid under the reaction conditions. Specified aliphatic acids are acetic, propionic, butyric, formic, trimethylacetic, methoxyacetic, lerulinic, acrylic and chloroacetic acids. An anhydrous solution of perchloric acid in the carboxylic acid may be prepared by the addition of the appropriate quantity of the corresponding carboxylic acid anhydride to an aqueous solution of perchloric acid. Examples describe the preparation of secondary butyl acetate.
