Abstract

951,480. Exciting alternators. S. BROD. Jan. 18, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1961], No. 37919/61. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions G3 and H4] The output voltage of a self-excited A.C. generator is regulated by controlling a variable shunt impedance connected across the field winding of the generator. As shown, a generator G having output leads B1, B2 and B3 is self-excited over a current transformer T1 and a rectifier MR1, the field winding F being shunted by a switching transistor Q3 controlled by a multivibrator circuit which includes transistors Q4, Q5. A direct voltage proportional to the output voltage of the generator is derived from a second rectifier MR2, and this direct voltage is compared with a reference voltage, across terminals BV1, RV2, to produce a control voltage which is applied to a transistor Q6 regulating the multivibrator circuit. Variations in the output voltage about a desired level produce corresponding variations in the conductivity of transistor Q6, thus altering the on/off ratio of each output cycle of the multivibrator circuit of Q4, Q5, whereby the period of conduction of transistor Q3 during each cycle of the multivibrator is varied in such a manner as to keep the output voltage constant. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the field winding is shunted by a transductor controlled by an error voltage derived from a Wheatstone bridge which includes a Zener diode as a reference source.
