Abstract
951,186. Boundary layer control. T.LESLIE. Dec. 18, 1962, No. 47654/62. Addition to 932,948. Heading F2R. [Also in Division B7] A V.T.O.L. aircraft as claimed in Claim 1 of the parent Specification provided with means for drawing boundary layer air from the surfaces of the aircraft. The fuselage 4 houses three verticallift installations as described and claimed in the abovementioned Specification, each surrounded by annular passages 15 which communicate with ducts 21, and through apertures 22, further ducts 23 and apertures 24 with the air flowing over the outer skin of the aircraft, such boundary air being drawn through the dust system into the gas flow passing through conical diffuser 9. The aircraft is provided with stub wings with elongated tips parallel to the longitudinal axis and formed with adjustable flaps 13 which control airflow from nozzles at the outer ends of ducts 12 which connect with engine pressure chambers 10. It is stated that air flowing over flaps 13 provides lift and controls circulation over the wings. The flaps 13 are formed with chordal slots through which air flows to form gaseous walls or fences.
