Abstract

951,102. Hydraulic apparatus. GIRLING Ltd. May 13, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 16898/59. Heading FIP. [Also in Division F2] An hydraulic power supply comprises a pump 4 for drawing fluid from a reservoir 1 and delivering it to an accumulator 7 disposed within the reservoir. The arrangement may be mounted in a vehicle for supplying brakes, steering or other mechanism, the pump, which has at least its body in the reservoir and may be of the constant or variable-delivery type, being driven from the engine or part of the transmission and drawing fluid through a filter 6 for supply to the accumulator which may be of the flexible diaphragm type using a compressed gas, or the flexible container type. A regulating valve 8 controls the pressure in the accumulator. The outlet of the accumulator is connected by a pipe 10 to a connection 11 which may be joined to the inlet port 20 of a valve controlling the brakes of the vehicle. The brakes are operated by a foot-pedal 13 which pivots a crank 14 to move a plunger 15 against a spring 16 abutting a pressing 17 engaging the end of a valve spool 18. Where the pedal is moved, the spool is moved and a reduced portion 22 of the spool opens the inlet port 20 so that fluid flows through radial ports 23, passage 24 and outlet 21 to the brakes. The fluid pressure acts on the lower end of the spool to provide "feel" for the operator. When the pedal is released the spool moves so that the reduced portion uncovers an exhaust port connected to the reservoir.
