950,921. Making dies; punches and dies; grinding. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961], No. 46637/62. Headings B3A, B3D and B3W. [Also in Division B4] A method of producing a die having a flatsided hole with shearing surfaces of a hard metal such as tungsten carbide comprises forming an aperture in a base of metal softer than the hard metal, securing a pair of blocks of hard metal in spaced relation on to a bar of metal softer than the hard metal, grinding the opposed faces of the blocks to a desired gap spacing, securing the resultant component to the base with the blocks on opposite sides of the aperture between bars of hard metal and removing the soft-metal bar from the component. Blocks 16 of tungsten carbide are brazed to a steel bar 18 and the faces 24 and the side faces 28a and 28b ground to the desired dimension. A steel base 10 is prepared by machining in it a groove 12 and apertures 14. The compound structure 22 is secured to the base by a cement 30 with tungsten carbide bars 32a and 32b on either side of it and a soft metal wedge 34. The steel bar 18 is removed, e.g. by grinding and the top surface of the assembly ground flat to finish the die.
