Material to be processed by a single screw extruder is brought to the extruder screw 2 by means of a twin screw conveyer 7, 8 driven through a gear 9 by a motor 10 which is controlled independently of the driving mechanism of the extruder screw. The twin screw 7, 8 may be mounted in a passage 6, the axis of which either lies in the vertical plane passing through the axis of the extruder screw 2 (Fig. 1), or is at an angle thereto.
