Abstract

Essential oils are extracted from citrus peel by passing the peel in the form of segments or flattened halves from hopper 15 into the bite between two rollers 20. Whichever of the two rollers 20 comes into contact with the albedo side of a particular piece of peel impales it by ribs 25 and conveys the piece to one or other of two knife blades 90a which separates the peel, along a plane parallel to the upper and lower surfaces of the peel, into a flavedo layer and an albedo layer. The albedo layers are thrown outwardly in the direction of arrows 145 while the flavado layers are squeezed between respective pairs of rollers 30 and 35 to extract oil therefrom. Volatile oil fractions are condensed and captured by water from bores 135, the water serving also to wash the oil and crushed peel into the flavado discharge space. Scraper blades 100, 120 and 121 are provided for all <PICT:0950146/C3/1> the rollers respectively. Specification 930,562, U.S.A. Specifications 2,199,876, 2,212,066 and 2,767,644 are referred to.
