Abstract

950,101. Packaging. M. E. WALLIS. Aug. 10, 1961, No. 28952/61. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B2] A method for packaging comestible articles by applying a surface coating of a highly viscous liquid which hardens at room temperature comprises passing the article horizontally through a series of thin sprayed films of the liquid. The method may be carried out by a machine consisting of a conveyer belt 10 which advances the article to pass through non-intersecting, continuous, thin, planar films f1-f6 and over a mechanism 32 which coats the bottom of the article. Each article A passes through the casing 42, heated by lamps 73, on the conveyer 10 which is divided by the mechanism 32. The liquid films issue from nozzles 44, 46, 48, 50, 52 and 54 which are positioned so that selected faces of the article are coated evenly as it passes through them. For example as the article. A advances to intersect the sheet f1 the liquid is cut off at 76 by the side d while the rest of the film 78 will be carried completely over the top of the article (see Fig. 4). As it moves away from the film, side c is coated. The mechanism 32 comprises a tank having holes in its upper surface through which the liquid is forced against the bottom of the article. After the article has been through the film f6, it passes over a bottom film thickness control mechanism 43, comprising a series of rotatable rollers 140 in a frame 120, and then on to a discharge conveyer 38. The nozzles may be rotated and moved closer together or further apart to coat different size articles (Fig. 8, not shown) and are fed by means of a system of piping from a reservoir (Fig. 7, not shown). Chilled or frozen meat may be given wax or plastics coatings. A coating of acetylated monoglycerides combined with ethyl cellulose may be used.
