Abstract

950,008. Moulding-machines. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 8, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1961], No. 44103/61. Heading B3F. A moulding machine comprises a frame 2, a squeeze ram assembly fixedly mounted on the upper part of the frame, a horizontally movable squeeze head 82, and means for shutting the squeeze head to a position beneath the ram assembly in which position it can move vertically under the action of the squeeze ram. The squeeze head 82 is shuttled horizontally by a sand carriage 36 to which it is loosely coupled by a pin 92. The sand carriage assembly is moved by cylinders 60, 61 between a position in which it receives sand from a hopper 27 and a position over a flask in position on the pattern P, and comprises louvres 52 controlled by cylinders 48, 49 to discharge sand into the flask. Movement of the carriage to the sand discharging position beneath the squeeze ram assembly places the squeeze head in the position shown dotted in Fig. 1, and drags a flask F by means of a latch 67 into position on to rollers 143, 144 carried by a frame 130 supported by the pattern table and vertically movable by cylinders 137, 138 between an upper position in line with the conveyer sections 72, 165 to receive a flask, and the lower position shown in Fig. 1 in which the flask is placed on the pattern plate. The pattern table is mounted on a jolt piston 111. After discharge of sand into the flask, the carriage 36 is retracted to the position beneath the hopper 27 for recharging, bringing the squeeze head 82 on to the rollers 100 of a frame 20 forming part of the squeeze ram assembly. The squeeze head is then moved down to compact the sand, the initial movement causing spring- loaded latches 171, 172, Fig. 3, to hold the squeeze head in the frame 20. The rollers 143, 144 of the vertically movable frame 130 are supported by short-stroke pistons 139, 140 which in their lowermost position bring the rollers below the tops of draw pins 162, Fig. 5, which then support the mould during its stripping from the pattern by elevation of the frame 130 by the cylinders 137, 138. The pistons 139, 140 are then elevated to lift the mould from the draw pins and align on the rollers 143, 144 with the exit conveyer 165.
