Abstract
949,389. Refrigerators. HEAT PUMP & REFRIGERATION Ltd. Oct. 12, 1961 [Oct. 20, 1960], No. 35945/60. Heading F4H. A cooling apparatus comprises a casing, a stepped shelf structure having at least one shelf with horizontal and vertical surfaces 5, 6, to which goods supported on the shelf may lose heat, and a refrigerative evaporator element 10 in heat exchange relationship with the surfaces 5, 6 and embedded in a mass 14 of heat conducting material, e.g. a mixture of granular silica and bitumen, forming a " cold bank". Vertical walls 1, 2, 3 of the casing are of decorative, thermally insulating material, with transparent extension pieces 7, 8, at the front and sides. The shelf structure has a sheet metal top 4 to which the evaporator 10 may be soldered, and a compartment below the shelf houses a refrigerant motor-compressor unit and condenser, a layer 12 of thermal insulation material on a roof 11 supporting the "cold bank " 14. A display stand in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), has a single cooled shelf at a higher level than an uncooled shelf. The shelf structure may alternatively be formed of resinbonded glass fibre, in which the evaporator 10 is embedded, or the evaporator element may comprise passages formed in the material of the shelf, e.g. by " roll-bonding."
