Abstract

948,805. Embossing; winding webs; embossing surfaces. INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CO. OF NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORPORATION S.A. June 9, 1961 [June 10, 1960], No. 20982/61. Headings B6B, B6C and B6J. In the winding of webs of thin thermoplastic material into rolls the material is preconditioned so as to compensate for the effects of shrinkage and density change therein after rolling, by embossing the web to produce a regular embossed pattern on the web immediately prior to winding the web upon a roll under such conditions that distortion of the thermoplastic material in excess of its elastic limit is avoided. A web 3 of thermoplastic material, which may have a gauge less than 0.002 inch, is embossed between a resilient, rubber cylinder 4 and an engraved, chromeplated steel cylinder 5 and is then wound on a roll centre tube 2 on a winding shaft 1 after passing round a spring-biased idler roller 6. The shaft 1 and the shafts of the cylinders 4, 5 are driven in synchronism. The cylinder 5 is engraved with helical grooves 7, 8 of opposite rotation and with circumferential grooves 9 so that a pattern of equilateral triangular bosses is formed thereon, there being preferably between 64 and 1,024 bosses per square inch. The pressure between the cylinders is sufficient to impress the pattern into the material of the web 6 without exceeding the elastic limit of the material and may be within the range of 25 to 150 1b. per square inch. Thus the pattern remains impressed on the material as it is wound up but disappears after a time whereby additional material is made available in each roll layer to compensate for the effects of shrinkage and density change, preventing the formation of ridges and depressions in the rolled web.
