948,758. Automatic gramophones. H. C. HANSEN. Feb. 9,1960 [ Feb. 9, 1959], No. 4524/59. Heading G5R. A pick-up arm 10 swings azimuthally with an arm 18 carrying an arcuate cam-surface 28, the arm being depressed by manual means (not shown) or automatic means to lift the stylus from the record via the lost-motion linkage 18, 24, 22,12. Striker means 42, rotating with the turntable are enabled to contact a lever 40 by the action of means 46 rocking the arm 39 at the end of play, whereupon:- (a) the bent-over end 41 of the lever 40 engages an abutment 35 on a shaft 30 and drives it to the right. (b) a roller 34 engages a face-cam track 37 and the shaft 30 is both rocked and rotated. (c) pressure of a roller 32 on the surface 28 raises the pick-up and the rotation of the roller winds the pick-up arm back outwardly. (d) the roller runs off the end of the track 39<SP>1</SP> with the aid of the portion 41<SP>1</SP> acting on the shaft 30, lowering the pick-up on to a side-rest (not shown) incorporating motor cut-out means. In the modified arrangement, Fig. 4, a lever 70, actuated by hand-operated means 80 may be swung anti-clockwise about its pivot 72, whereupon the edge 71 actuates a ramp 78 on a bladespring 74 secured to the deck (not shown) to raise the pick-up allowing it to be adjusted by hand to a point intermediate the full traverse of a record or to the edge of a record of non- regular diameter. Regular diameters may be indicated by the unreferenced knife on the blade 74 and grooves on the member 26; on return of the hand means 80 to its neutral position, the ramp 78 allows the pick-up to be lowered slowly. When the lever 70 is swung clockwise, an abutment 88 engages the lever 38 to engage the members 40 and 42 as above, to reject a record before its playing is complete. The parts rotating with the turntable may form part of a complete autochanger mechanism as described in Specification 801,176 and the turntable drive means may be as detailed in Specification 757,378.
