Abstract

Stereoregular homopolymers of esters of unsaturated acids with unsaturated alcohols of the type, R1-(CH=CR2)n-COO(CH2)m -CR3=CR4 in which R1, R2, R3, and R4, represent hydrogen, an alkyl, aryl, or cycloalkyl radical containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2, R2 is hydrogen when n = 2, and m is O or a whole number up to 6, are made by polymerizing the esters at a temperature of from -120 DEG C. to +20 DEG C. in the presence of (1) organometallic compounds of Group 1 or 2 of the Mendel<\>eeff Periodic Table, (2) compounds having metal to nitrogen bonds of the general formula: <FORM:0948718/C3/1> in which R1 and R11 are the same or different alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or alkyl aryl groups or form a heteroeyclic ring with the nitrogen atom, Me1 is an alkali metal, Me11 is a metal of Group 1, 2, or 3 of the Periodic Table, X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, r is zero or a whole number and s + t is equal to the sum of the valences of Me1 and Me11 and (3) complexes obtained from compounds defined in (1) and (2) above with Lewis bases. The monomeric esters are preferably selected from esters of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, cinnamic, pentadienoic, sorbic, or beta-styrylacrylic acid with vinyl allyl, or methallyl alcohol or with 3-butenol-1, and 4-pentanol-1. Suitable catalysts are lithium butyl or fluorenyl, magnesium phenyl bromide, lithium diethyl amide, magnesium diethyl amide monobromide, lithium aluminium tri-diethylamide monohydride, and complexes thereof with diethyl ether, tributyl amine, dimethylaniline, anisole, triphenylphosphine, and pyridine. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymers may be vulcanized or cross-linked. In examples the preparations of crystalline poly-(methallylsorbate and poly-(4-pentenyl sorbate) both having trans-1, 4-enchainment, poly-(allylacrylate) of identity period 6.5<\>rA, and poly-(allylmethacrylate) are described.
