Abstract
A condensed isopropyl silicate is made by heating isopropyl orthosilicate containing dissolved HCl at from 40 DEG to 55 DEG C., adding thereto water and, as mutual solvent for the reactants, isopropyl alcohol, the amount of water being from 0.75 to 1 mol per gram atom of Si in the orthosilicate, whereby an exothermic reaction ensues and HCl gas is liberated, refluxing the mixture and distilling off isopropyl alcohol. The isopropyl orthosilicate reactant is suitably the crude product obtained by reaction of SiCl4 and isopropyl alcohol. At least part of the alcohol used may be a product recovered from a previous preparation of a condensed isopropyl silicate, and at least part of the alcohol reacted with SiCl4 may be the product through which has been passed HCl liberated during reaction of SiCl4 with isopropyl alcohol. In a typical example, (1) isopropyl alcohol was slowly added to SiCl4 with subsequent heating of the mixture to 50 DEG C., air being passed therethrough; water and isopropyl were then added and the resulting mixture was refluxed for 1 hour, after which excess alcohol was distilled off up to 200 DEG C., to yield a condensed silicate having a SiO2 content of 37.1% and an orthosilicate content of 19.4%.
