In a machine for dividing a stack S of paper into stacks Sa, Sb of equal heights, the undivided stack is moved on to an endless belt 20 where it is engaged by a separating plate 64. The lower stack Sb passes on to a conveyer belt 23 which is driven at twice the speed of the belt 20. The upper stack Sa is moved up the plate 64 by an auxiliary belt 67 and passes on to a conveyer belt 57 arranged to discharge on to a pivoted plate 99 which swings downwardly when the stack Sa moves on to it. This stack is deposited on the belt 23 but is spaced from the stack Sb. Framework.-A structure 50 carries the separating plate 64 the pivoted plate 99 and rollers 55-59 for the conveyer belt 57. It is supported at each side by parallel links 131, 132, which are pivoted respectively at 133 to side rails of an upper frame 78 and at 134 to the side rail of a frame 15. The frame 78 supports all rollers 68-71, 73, 74 which engage the belt 67 and is vertically adjustable in the main frame of the machine to accommodate the machine to stacks of different height. The parallel-linkage support of the structure 50 automatically adjusts the level of the latter so that the separating plate 64 continues to equally divide the incoming stacks. Downward movement of the frame 78 is adjustably limited by a vertical screw 150. To permit stacks to be fed through the machine without division, the frames 50, 78 may be quickly elevated by a solenoid controlled piston-cylinder means 164, 165 which actuates a cable 160 attached to the frame 78.
