Abstract
948,055. Cable harnesses. LING-TEMCOVOUGHT Inc. April 6, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 12230/60. Heading H2C. A multiconductor cable comprises a plurality of elongated conductors provided each with its own insulating sheath and slidable relative to each other the whole being encased in a rigid cover of a hard-curing resin moulded about the conductors. Fig. 1 shows a number of insulated conductors 12 which may be of various cross-section and may include coaxial cables. The various conductors may be insulated with P.T.F.E. in order to allow them to slide on each other and are built up into a harness of the required shape fastened together with temporary spot ties of twine. The harness is then laid in the female section of a mould 54 previously lined with the material of which the casing is to be formed. This material may be of glassfibre cloth impregnated with a hard curing resin and must be adhesively imcompatible with the material of the conductor sheaths. The portions 62, 64 of this material are folded over as shown dotted (Fig. 9), and the male portion 53 of the mould is put in place with sufficient pressure to compact the cores to the desired shape and the pressure is maintained until the cover resin has set to a rigid dimensionally stable state. In the finished device shown in Fig. 1, strengthening metal inserts are provided in the walls of the casing at bends. Raised portions 40 are provided to enable a certain number of conductors to be lead out, where the number of conductors in the channel is reduced, for example because some have left through a cross passage 33, the cross section of the channel may be reduced. Where conductors leave the moulded passage they may be protected by a flexible member 41 consisting of a glass-fibre cloth exterior and P.T.F.E. interior, the end of the tube being moulded into the casing. At the end of the casing, for example at 18, where conductors leave a tube may be flared. The casing may be separated from a further casing 47 by a number of uncased conductors 45.
