Abstract

Carbon and like transfer sheets and ribbons are prepared by coating a base material with a layer of pressure transferable wax, applying a dispersion of a pigment and a volatile carrier, together with either a non-volatile plasticizing agent or a bonding agent, with or without the plasticizing agent, and heating. The pigment is absorbed into the wax softened by the heating but is not distributed uniformly through the wax. The sheet is clean to the touch and matter reproduced from it does not smudge. The plasticizing agents assist the blending of the pigment with the wax layer. Suitable plasticizing agents are vegetable oils, polyalkylene glycols or esters such as butyl stearate or tricresyl phosphate. The bonding agent aids the formation of the pigment dispersion. It must be partially miscible with the wax layer of the base, when softened, and is preferably partly soluble in the vehicle for the pigment dispersion. Suitable bonding agents are ethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose hydroxy methyl cellulose, spermaceti, cetyl alcohol or a wax as used on the base layer. The pigment vehicle may be alcohol, water, petroleum naphtha, ethyl acetate or a polyalkylene glycol. The pigment may be carbon black, graphite or magnetic iron oxide. The base may be paper or a film such as cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose polyethylene terephthalate or vinyl polymer. The wax coating may be pigmented initially, e.g. with titanium dioxide, before the application of the pigment dispersion.
