Abstract

A refractory material containing alpha alumina, zircon, mullite, zirconia and a glassy matrix is produced by heating 10-30% by weight of calcined alumina, 20-50% tabular alumina, and 25-70% of zircon at 2800 DEG F. or above. The product contains coarse crystals and conglomerates of alpha alumina and an intermediate phase of unreacted zircon bonded with fine crystals of mullite and zirconia and a minor amount of glassy matrix. The reactants are mixed in water to form a slurry, cast into a mould which is removed after dewatering, the shaped article is dried and fired. Organic binders and deflocculating agents may be used.
