Abstract

947,417. Bookbinding machines. L. J. B. R. FRENCH. May 31, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 21855/61. Heading B6A. A bookbinding machine comprises a clamp slidable by hand along a track 2 and adapted to support a book spine downwards, foot pedals 16, 16a for opening the clamp at the input and output ends of the machine, respectively, a cutter 21 revolvable about a vertical axis for trimming the spine of the book, a gluing roller 31 for applying glue to the trimmed book spine and cover supporting and nipping jaws 42 for applying the cover to the spine of the book. The clamp comprises co-operating plates 4 urged together by a spring 5, one plate being supported by rollers 3 running in the track 2 and the other plate being supported by studs 6 connected to a bridge-piece 7 carrying a roller 8. The free ends of the studs 6 are threaded to receive nuts 9 for adjusting the distance between the plates according to the thickness of the book to be bound. Roller 8 is engaged at opposite ends of the track by bell-crank levers 10, 10a, interconnected by links 11, which are connected to a lever pivoted to the machine frame and adapted to be pivoted by either of foot pedals 16 or 16a to open the clamp. When loading the clamp, the book is positioned against a stop 18 with the spine of the book resting on a plate 19 positioned below the track 2 and capable of vertical adjustment, to determine accurately the amount of the book which projects below the clamp. Normally, the cutter is covered by plates 27, 28, cover-plate 27 being capable of lateral adjustment. The coverplate 28 is mounted on spring-loaded arms and normally abuts the cover-plate 27. The coverplate 28 is moved laterally by a book to expose the cutter. The cutter blades are shaped to constitute an impeller or a separate impeller is incorporated in the cutter head to force the paper cuttings along a pipe 25 into a bag 26. A hard abrasive disc may be mounted at the centre of the cutter to roughen the edges of the sheets of the book. The gluing roller is mounted in a tank 32 containing a scraper 35. The tank is fitted with an electrically heated element and thermostat, so that hot glue may be used, and is adjustable vertically. A cover, or a glued strip of lining, is placed by hand on the jaws 42, which are mounted on a central pillar, adapted to be raised or lowered for pressing the cover or strip on to the spine of the book, and are interconnected by a system of connecting rods and bell-crank levers, whereby the jaws are moved towards or away from each other to nip the cover or strip about the spine of the book. Movement of the pillar and jaws is controlled by a cam which makes a single revolution on closing a switch by hand. The cover is positioned accurately on the jaws by magnetic stops and a spring-urged pawl on the clamp engages a recess in the rail to locate the clamp over the cover.
