The rates of feeding material constituents to be sintered on to a travelling grate conveying them to an oven are conjointly controlled in accordance with the speed of the grate, as measured by a tachogenerator. As shown (Fig. 2), a number of hoppers V1-V6 containing the various material constituents, are discharged through weigh feeders D1-D6 to blending drums M1, M2, where the materials are mixed with controlled quantities of water before being sintered at SM and cooled at SK. The speed of travel of the sinter grate as measured by a tachogenerator is used to control (a) the rate of delivery from each hopper V1-V6 while maintaining a predetermined proportionality, (b) the rate of feeding the blended mixture on to the travelling grate SM, (c) the speed of the sinter cooler SK. These controls may be effected directly or indirectly, and modified by signals representing the moisture content of the mixture in the blending drums M1, M2, the height of material in the feed hoppers A, Z,and the height of material on the travelling grate SM and on the sinter cooler SK.
