A combustion chamber for a gas turbine engine comprises a cylindrical shell surrounding a flame tube, a burner, a mixing device and a radially directed air entry aperture to the chamber having a helical partition dividing the air stream into upstream and downstream flows. A cylindrical shell 1 surrounds a flame tube 7 having a burner 9 and an air/gas mixing device 8. A helical partition 4 divides the air stream entering the shell 1 from the aperture 2 into an upstream flow into annular space 5 to cool the flame tube wall and a downstream flow into annular space 6 and mixing device 8. An adjustable vane 3 varies the proportions of air entering spaces 5 and 6.
