Abstract

946,921. Vehicle brakes. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 3, 1961 [Feb. 9, 1960], No. 4551/60. Heading F2F. In a vehicle braking system, the braking torque on the front wheels is increased in relation to that on the rear wheels in proportion to the load transfer on deceleration. A brake pedal 1 is fulcrumed about a point 3 to raise a link 5 having a lost motion connection 5a with a link 6 pivoted at 7a to a beam 7 contacting rollers of two piston valves 16, 17. The end of the link 6 remote from the beam is connected to the pedal 1 through a link 8 and a " feel " spring 12. The valves 16, 17 control the pressure of brake fluid through the front, 22, and rear, 23, brakes respectively; a continuous flow being maintained from reservoirs 20, 21 by pumps 18, 19 through brake cylinders 22a, 23a, chambers 26, 27, passages 29, 30, chambers 31, 32 to the reservoirs 20, 21. Light actuation of the pedal 1 causes slight compression of the "feel" spring 12 and movement of the link 6 in the direction of the arrow to move the valves 16, 17 and cause their pistons 35, 36 to throttle the passages 29, 30 and produce a pressure rise in the system to apply the brakes. As the pedal movement is small, the lost motion slot 5a allows the link 5 to rise without changing the position of the beam 7. Heavier brake application requiring greater pedal movement causes the link 5 to raise the link 6 and beam 7 to increase the travel of the valve 16 in relation to the valve 17 to provide increased braking on the front wheels proportional to the load transfer produced by such braking. In a modification, the front brakes are actuated both by cylinders in the circuit of the valve 16 and extra cylinders in the circuit of the valve 17.
