Abstract

<PICT:0945583/C2/1> Relates to a new antibiotic designated 9671 RP which is a yellow substance crystallizing as fine needles, melting point 310-320 DEG C. with decomposition, having an optical rotation [a ]20D = +38 DEG (C=1, pyridine), analysing C 49.6%, H 4.0%, O 16.7%, N 14.4%, S 15.75-15.80%, having an ultraviolet spectrum in solution in water containing dimethylformamide exhibiting two absorption maxima at 242 mm (E1%1cm=525) and 322 mm (E1%1cm=229), having the infra-red absorption spectrum shown in the figure, and being soluble in chloroform, dioxane, pyridine, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulphoxide, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and benzene, and insoluble in water and petroleum ether. The antibiotic may be produced by culturing Streptomyces actuosus Nov. spec. NRRL 2954 on a nutrient medium and separating from the culture the antibiotic so produced, preferably by extraction with an organic solvent. The antibiotic may be purified by crystallization from acetic acid with or without preliminary treatments by washing and chromotography using a column of alumina. The antibiotic 9671 RP may be used to form pharmaceutical compositions in association with a pharmaceutical carrier, these compositions being normally administered topically.
