Abstract
945,409. Tail assemblies for self-propelled missiles. HOTCHKISS-BRANDT. July 6, 1961 [July 11, 1960; June 15, 1961], No. 24444/61. Heading F3A. An extensible projectile fin arrangement for self propelled missiles of the type wherein the fins pivot in longitudinal radial planes about pivots positioned near the forward ends of the fins is characterized by the fins being acted on by a thrust ring movable along the longitudinal axis of the projectile between a forward position in which the fins are folded rearwards and a rear position in which the fins are extended, and by the provision of thrust exerting means. A retaining ring 27 is removed prior to placing the projectile in a launching tube. On firing the propellent charge in the chamber C, combustion pressure is transmitted through orifices 32 to pistons 30 which force a ring 29 rearwards thereby extending the fins after leaving the launching tube. The fins are retained in their extended position by interlocking of a cylindrical portion 35 of the ring 29 with the fin portion 40 (Fig. 3). In a second embodiment the nozzle T is in one piece, and in a third embodiment of similar construction to that shown in Fig. 1 the pistons are replaced by compression springs; these springs may be replaced or supplemented by powder charges (independent of the main propellent charge) which act against pistons in closed cylinders.
