945,397. Mineral-mining machines. GEBR. EICKHOFF MASCHINENFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI m.b.H. May 3, 1961 [May 7, 1960], No. 15965/61. Heading E1F. To allow of the mining of thin mineral seams the means by which the cutter drum is supported and driven from the side of the machine is so designed that eccentrically disposed component parts of the means allow of smaller diameter drums being used. The cutter drum 5 is secured by an internal flange 22 midway of the length of the drum to a driven shaft 19 extending through and supported in a tubular sleeve 20 extending within the cutter drum and secured to a rectangular end plate of a bearing structure 8 positioned within and clamped by the plate to the side of the machine. The structure 8 serves as an end bearing for the shaft 19 and supports an aligned stub shaft 11 extending through the structure 8 into engagement with the shaft 19 on an axis offset below the mid horizontal plane of the gear head of the machine. The stub shaft is driven through a compactly arranged gear train in the cutter head from a motor within the machine. The cutter head may be swung about the direction of advance of the machine to allow of cutting at either side of the machine and the structure 8 may be inverted in the head to correctly position the cutter drum.
