Abstract

945,081. Electrically released switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 25, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 2823/62. Heading H2B. [Also in Division H1] In an electric switch of the cross-bar type comprising contact strips (1, 2, 11) of electrically conducting, resilient and magnetizable material, a selecting conductor (5, 6, 12) is associated with each strip so that at each crosspoint the crossing conductors are surrounded by a magnetic circuit part of which includes the portions of the contact strips at the cross-point, a magnetic circuit being energized when electric current flows in the two conductors at a crosspoint whereby the corresponding portions of the contact strips are brought into electrical and magnetic co-operation. Contact plugs 3, 4 or 9, 10 which may be attached, to a common insulating board 7, to one of the contact strips, or one on each strip serve to complete the magnetic and electric circuits at a cross-point. The latter is held due to remanence in the magnetic circuit and is released by passing current in the opposite direction through either of the selecting conductors at the cross-point. The contact portions of strips 1, 6, 12 may be coated with a precious metal e.g. gold or rhodium. The switch may be immersed in oil.
