Abstract
Polyethylene is made by polymerizing ethylene using a two-component catalyst (1) a titanium-containing compound prepared by reacting TiCl4 at a temperature within the range of 0 to 40 DEG C. in a saturated hydrocarbon with aluminium ethyl sesquichloride, the TiCl4 and the sesquichloride being reacted in a molar ratio of Ti to Al within the range of 1:1.1 to 1:1.9, and recovering and washing the reaction product and (2) an organo-aluminium compound. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent and the product recovered by conventional techniques e.g. addition of n-butanol, and steam distillation.
