[Also in Division H1] In the preparation of printing plates, a conductive support e.g. an aluminium foil, paper coated to resist penetration by a coating solution of a copper or zinc plate, is coated with an insulating coating comprising at least one organic photoconductive substance and a compound of high molecular weight containing groups conferring solubility in alkaline or basic liquids, electrostatically charged, exposed, developed and fixed to form a resist image on the coating, and then treated with an alkaline liquid to dissolve away the coating where it is not protected by the resist. The photoconductive substance may be an oxazole, a thiazole, an oxadiazole, e.g. as in Specification 851, 218, an imidazolone, an imidazolthione, a triazole, a triazine, a hydrazide, or a hydrazone. The alkaline-soluble compound may be vinyl polymers and interpolymers containing carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride, sulphonic acid, sulphonamide or sulphonimide groups such as polystyrene sulphonic acid; interpolymers of styrene with maleic anhydride, resins containing acid groups such as phthalic acid partial ester resins; polycarbonate resins, maleic acid resins, alkyd resins, or colophony resins;or highly polymeric polyacrylic acid sensitizers, e.g. dyestuffs, pigments and fillers may also be included. The developer may be a pigmented resin powder comprising a glass ball or iron powder carrier and a toner such as a polystyrene-colophony mixture of low melting point containing carbon black and spirit nigrosin fixed by heating or a similar toner in an insulating liquid. The alkaline liquid may comprise a solution in water or aliphatic ethers, lower ketones and esters, or solvents containing alcohol groups, of ammonia, alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkaline phosphates and polyphosphates, lower alkyl (up to C 8 ) amines, ethylene diamines and polyamines, ethanolamines, piperidine and its N- methyl or N- ethyl derivatives, morpholine or acid amides such as dimethyl formamide or in some cases the liquid bases may be used undiluted. Thickeners such as polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl or alkyl cellulose, or soluble starch may be added. To improve the hydrophilic qualities of the image-free non-printing parts of aluminium planographic plates water-soluble silicates may be included in the alkaline liquid. After treatment with the alkaline liquid, these plates are rinsed with water and may then be wiped over with diluted phosphoric acid to ready them for ink-reception. Examples are also given of producing a zinc relief printing plate and an intaglio copper printing plate.
