Abstract

In the production of bulked yarn, viscose rayon e.g. freshly spun or "never-dried" fibres having a wet extensibility of at least 30% are subjected to stretching by at least 20% while wet, the stretched fibre is dried while still under tension and 20-40% thereof (as continuous filaments or staple fibres) is combined in a mixed fibre yarn (which may be plied) with 80-60% of fibre having a lower potential shrinkage e.g. 0-5%. The yarn is bulked by immersing it in, or spraying with, an aqueous fluid e.g. water at 80-100 DEG C. or steam, to cause and allow differential fibre-shrinkage effects. The low shrinkage fibres may be of regenerated cellulose (viscose), cellulose acetate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, cotton, flax, wool or regenerated protein.
