Abstract

The invention comprises a 2b -thiocyano-3a -hydroxy, 5a -thiocyano-6b -hydroxy, 11b -thiocyano-12a -hydroxy and 12a -thiocyano-11b -hydroxy steroid of the androstane, pregnane, cholane, cholestane or spirostan series, and the preparation thereof by treating a corresponding epoxy-steroid with thiocyanic acid, which may be formed in situ by shaking a salt of thiocyanic acid and an acid in an inert solvent, or may be used in the form of a gas. The reactant for the above process may be a 2a , 3a -, 5b , 6b -, 11a , 12a -or 11b , 12b -epoxy-steroid. (5-Thiocyano-3b , 6b -dihydroxy-5a -pregnun-20-one and the preparation thereof by the above method are excluded). In the examples the following compounds are prepared:-methyl 3a -acetoxy-11b -thiocyano-12a -hydroxy-5b -cholanate, methyl 3-oxo-11b -thiocyano-12a -hydroxy-5b -cholanate, 3b -acetoxy-11b -thiocyano-12a -hydroxy-5a , 22a -spirostan, 11b -thiocyano-12a -hydroxy-3, 20-dioxo-4-pregnene, methyl 3a -acetoxy-11b -hydroxy-12a -thiocyano-5b -cholanate, 3b -acetoxy-5a -thiocyano-6b -hydroxy-5a -cholestane, 2b -thiocyano-3a -hydroxy-5a -cholestane, and 2b -thiocyano-3a , 17b -dihydroxy-17a -methyl-5a -androstane.
