Abstract
942,807. Liquefaction of gases. AIR LIQUIDE S.A. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE. May 3, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 15574/60. Heading F4P. Liquefaction of a gas e.g. natural methane prior to storage at low pressure in a reservoir 39 is effected by cooling highly compressed natural methane in heat exchangers 2, 6 traversed by counterflowing liquid propane, admitted through ducts 3, 7 and exhausted through ducts 4, 8, further cooling in exchangers 14, 18 traversed by counterflowing liquid ethylene admitted through ducts 15, 19 and exhausted through duets 16, 20 and finally cooled to liquefaction temperature firstly in an exchanger 22 traversed by a counterflowing auxiliary stream of undercooled liquid methane admitted through a duct 23 and exhausted through a duct 25 and secondly in an exchanger 27 traversed by the counterflowing auxiliary methane supplied through a duct 28 from a turbine 66 and exhausted through a duct 29; the so liquefied natural methane being expanded in a valve 35 into a separator 36 from which liquid methane is passed through a duct 38 into the reservoir 39 whilst more volatile impurities together with methane vapour from the reservoir are supplied through ducts 42, 33, 34, 11 to an exchanger 10 serving to assist cooling of the feed gas. The auxiliary methane performs a closed cycle comprising a compressor 43 discharging through exchangers 45, 49 traversed by liquid propane from a supply duct 70, an exchanger 53 cooled by expanded methane leaving the exchanger 27 through the duct 29 and leaving an exchanger 61 through a duct 54, an exchanger 57 cooled by liquid ethylene from a supply duct 75, and the exchanger 61 from which liquid methane is returned to the compressor via ducts 62, 67, 28, 29, 54, 55. The liquid methane in duct 62 is divided into a first portion which is expanded at a valve 63 and returned through the'exchanger 61 after which it is joined by a second portion having been expanded in a valve 24 and passed through the exchanger 22 and thereafter expanded in the turbine 66 to the exhaust of which is added the remainder of the liquid methane in duct 28 leading back to the compressor 43.
